Mobile, AL Build Day and Bike Rodeo

6/3/22

Another build day today! We partnered with the Habitat for Humanity in Mobile, AL to work on two neighboring build sites. The two houses needed some caulking, but the primary task was building a fence, which involved digging post holes, pouring concrete, and drilling together the framework for the fence. The Habitat staff were very friendly and helpful. We're all learning and practicing a wide variety of skills on the build sites; most so far have had new tasks that we haven't completed previously on this trip. They provided lunch from Foosackly's, a local Alabama and Florida chain restaurant.

After returning from the build site, we hosted a Bike Rodeo to teach children in the community about bikes. We had just as much fun as the kids using chalk and pretending to be obstacles in their obstacle course. Obstacles included cars, ducks, chickens, bears, motorcycles, elderly people, frogs, and policemen/women.

The women who provided dinner were incredibly accommodating to our various dietary restrictions, with a delicious meal full of vegetables and plenty of gluten free, dairy free, meat free, and nut free options.

Dinner was followed by a team building activity where we shared our goals for the trip, highlights, and how we can support each other while passing a cord between us to create a visual supportive network; the cord will now be cut into short segments for us to take with us and be worn as bracelets.
