Today was our wheel dip and our first official ride day! We left our amazing hosts at St. Paul's By-The-Sea Episcopal Church after an amazing breakfast provided by the Brotherhood of St. Andrew's (pictured left) then headed to Jacksonville Beach to dip our rear wheels in the ocean. We will end our trip all the way in Santa Barbara by dipping our front wheels at the end of the summer!
After our dip we headed to the oldest settled city in the United States, St. Augustine, which was settled on Timucuan land. The ride was about 30 miles on a beautiful section of the A1A that followed the Atlantic Ocean the entire ride.
Along the way we participated in our first sweep challenge. Sweep is a group of two riders who stay behind the rest of the group the whole time with extra tubes in case of a flat. They come up with challenges in the morning for the rest of the group to take part in to keep everybody having fun while on the road.
Today, we were tasked with creating the best drawing for the group and our team won with a drawing of Honey BBQ Fritos (the absolute best snack, according to Alice).
The runners-up (pictured below) were incredible as well.
Also along the route - I saw my first Gopher tortoise! They are keystone species whose burrows are shared by hundreds of other species and are classified as threatened. This is just one of the many wildlife sightings that we had in my ride group.

Once we got into St. Augustine, we spread out in the First United Methodist Church's Parish Hall and settled in for a great night's rest before our second great ride day (plus many many more to come)!
